Thank You Email After an Interview
A thank-you email won't win you a job you were going to lose, but it does one useful thing: it shows you were paying attention. Most candidates skip it, so sending one — especially one that references something specific — quietly sets you apart.
The basic template
Subject: Thank you — [Your name]
Hi [First name],
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I really enjoyed our conversation, especially [specific thing — e.g. hearing how the team approaches X / our discussion about Y].
The more I heard about the [role / company], the more interested I am, and I'm confident my experience with [relevant skill] would let me contribute from day one.
Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing about next steps.
Best,
[Your name]
A shorter version
Hi [First name],
Thanks again for the conversation today — I especially enjoyed [one specific thing]. It made me even more excited about the [role].
Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide, and I look forward to next steps.
Best,
[Your name]
Three things that help
- Send it the same day. The window closes fast.
- Reference one specific detail. It's the difference between a form letter and a real one.
- Keep it under five sentences. Shorter is better here.
If you interviewed with multiple people, send each one a brief, slightly personalized note rather than one mass email. It takes a few extra minutes and reads as far more sincere.
Writing a follow-up note by hand? Check the length.
The word counter keeps any message tight and on-point.
